Announcements

Bastrop County 4-H Members, Club Managers, Volunteer Leaders, and Parents: The January newsletter had a few mistakes that I would like to clear up. First, the Bastrop County 4-H Council will be at 6:30 pm not 7:00 pm. The other correction has to do with the Bastrop Area Livestock Show broiler orders. They will be arriving on February 16, 2000 for retrieval at the Extension Office.

Hay Judging - The Extension Office along with Bastrop County 4-H would like to congratulate the Junior Team (Jerry Dean Shimek, Jacob Wilhelm, Annalyn Owens, and Lyon Owens) which placed 5th, Senior Team 1 (Tiffany Richard, Peter Owens, and Chris Marburger) which placed 8th, and Senior 2 (Steven Henderson, Brent Gattis, Heath Gattis, and Michael Marburger) which placed 9th at the State Hay Judging Contest in Hallettsville, Tx on December 9th.

Around the Coop

Bastrop County 4-H will sponsor a poultry workshop on February 10th at 6:30pm. Dr. Fred Thornberry will discuss housing, nutrition, and selection of show broilers using San Antonio birds. This will be an excellent seminar for 1st year poultry exhibitors and a good refresher course for all the chicken pros of Bastrop County. It will be held at the Bastrop Show Barn.

Bastrop Area Livestock Show broilers will be arriving at the Extension office on February 16th. The will not arrive until after 2:00pm. Please call the Extension Office after 2:00pm to find out the arrival time of these chicks. Make sure you have your houses and heating lamps ready for these chicks.

Foods and Horizontal Growth

The Bastrop County Pecan Auxiliary is having a "Valentine" Bake Sale on February 11th at the FNB Civic Room from 11:30am to 1:30pm. All proceeds will go to 4-H Scholarships and Community Service Projects. 4-H members are encouraged to enter dishes in this bake sale. For more information call Ms. Bonner at the Extension Office.

Scramble Mania

This year Bastrop County 4-H will be represented in the calf scrambles of San Antonio and Houston. Here are their scramble dates, times, and places if you want to purchase a ticket and support these fellow 4-Hers.

San Antonio
Date Time Participant
2-7 Evening Jeff Klaus (Jenna Warner - Alt)
2-9 Evening William Cook - Alt
2-10 Evening Brent Gattis & Thomas Cook

Houston
Date Time Participant
2-19 Matinee Heath Gattis, Brent Gattis, Jason Klaus, Amanda Blisard, Weston Warnock, Robert Vaughn
2-20 Matinee Jenna Warner, Steven Henderson, William Cook, Jarret Griffith - All Alt

We have a few alternates in these groups of scramblers, so you will also need to attend and be ready to scramble.

Zan's Tips for Catching

  • Use good judgement and conserve your energy.
  • Try to catch the calf by the head and not the tail (catching a calf by the tail is like getting a water skiing lesson).
  • After you catch, don't try and drag the calf, get behind it and drive it while holding on to the rope. This will get you to the finish quickly.

Good luck to all of you.

Shooting Sports

The Shooting Sports Extravaganza will be held on February 16th from 1:00 to 5:00pm at the Austin Rifle Club. Contestants will be able to compete in different categories such as shotgun, pistol, rifle, archery, and other marksmanship events. This contest is free, so for more information contact Jennie Dietrich at (512) 836-6284 or Leland Gebert at (512) 285-2494. A flyer for this competition is enclosed with this newsletter.
