The Power of Youth Pledge Campaign announced by 4-H will harness the energy, interests, and geographic reach of 4-H participants in all 3,067 counties in America. The Power of Youth Pledge Campaign is one of 4-H's gifts to the nation in honor of its centennial. You can pledge to help an elderly neighbor rake their yard or pledge to organize a statewide project to collect food for the hungry.

The 4-H youth development movement is celebrating its Centennial as one of our nation's longest serving youth development organizations. And it is doing so by organizing a National Conversation on Youth Development in the 21st Century. Then, on February 28—March 2, 2002, over 1,600 individuals from every state will convene in Washington, D.C. for the National Conversation. They will bring the recommendations from their Local and State Conversations into one national report to be presented to President Bush and the Congress.

4-H Pledge
"I pledge my Head to clearer thinking,
my Heart to greater loyalty,
my Hands to larger service,
and my Health to better living
. . . for my Club, my community,
my country and my world."

Origins of the 4-H Pledge
Otis Hall, State Leader of Kansas, was responsible for the original wording of the 4-H pledge, officially adopted by the State 4-H Leaders at the first National 4-H camp in 1927. The pledge remained unchanged until 1973, when it was revised to include "and my world."  Head--stands for clearer thinking and decision-making. Knowledge
that is useful throughout life. Heart—stands for greater loyalty, strong personal values, positiveself concept, concern for others. Hands—stands for larger service,
workforce preparedness, useful skills, science and technology literacy. Health—stands for better living, healthy lifestyles.

If you would like to get involved in the 4-H Centennial project, there are a number of ways you can make a difference.  The 4-H Centennial will feature Local
Conversations in your community. These Conversations will contribute to the success of the Centennial.
The calendar of Conversations provides information about what Conversations are planned in your region. You can also find out about other Conversations through out the nation. Sign up online for the 4-H Centennial Newsletter
