Demonstrations, Applied Research,

Special Studies

Project Range Care, Co-coordinator.  A state-wide educational effort by the Rangeland ecology and management Extension Specialists.  The focus is upon proper range management with associate benefits through proper livestock and wildlife stocking rate decisions.

South Texas Spanish Goat Project, Co-coordinator.  An integrated program of demonstrations, conferences field days, publications, etc. designed to develop a meat goat industry through production, marketing, and consumer education.

Comprehensive Ranch Management for Profit.  A South Texas Integrated Resource Management Program, Chairman.  A coordinated effort of range, livestock, economics, and wildlife Extension Specialists to integrate programs concerning ranch management into a comprehensive approach to ranch resource management.

Alternative Forage Systems for South Texas, including pricklypear as a forage.  Erratic rainfall and frequent poor grass production necessitate livestock feeding supplements.  This program is designed to explore living nutrient banks such as pricklypear, saltbush, leadtree, etc.

Buffelgrass Forage Dynamics and Management.  Buffelgrass is an important forage grass on two million acres in South Texas.  Poor documentation and lack of understanding of management has caused problems for grazing this grass.  This program is collecting data and formulating management strategies for forage systems.

Brush Management with Herbicides and Associated Forage Responses.  93% of South Texas rangeland supports some level of brush.  Programming efforts have been to determine technological efficacy, economics and forage responses to better meet producer objectives.

Integrated Programs in Ranch - Wildlife - Livestock Relationships.  The primary rangeland resources in South Texas are livestock and wildlife.  Optimum combinations of multi-species grazing and impacts on habitat of brush management are major programming efforts.

Stocker Cattle Strategies for South Texas.  Diversification of livestock enterprises from cow/calf stocker cattle is a current problem confronting many producers.  Information on strategies, grazing, economics, etc., are necessary for stocker enterprises to be successful.

Rangeland Restoration.  The use of native plants and ecological procedures to repair water, nutrient, energy and vegetation dynamic cycles on rangeland.

Total Resource Management.  A unit Strategic planning effort to balance resource uses and the best and highest landowner benefits; direct natural resource changes and maintain diversity and flexibility to meet landowner goals.

Grant support secured over $900,000 from a variety of sources from 1976 to present.
