The
Winners Circle Congratulations! Russell Farrow and Darla Hiller from Sinton 4-H Club have won a certificate to purchase a breeding animal for the 2001 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. Darla Hiller also received a scramble certificate from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo to participate with a breeding animal in the 2001 Stock Show. These two individuals did a fantastic job representing San Patricio County this past scramble season. Since the
majors have ended the Judging Team has been at full force attending
contest across District 11. Team members that have been hard at work are
Luke Vacek, Caitlin Demmer, Audra Demmer, Leslie Demmer, Anna Vacek, Dana
Dohman, Casey Dugat, Blaine Cherry, Russell Farrow, Stephen Smith, Erin
Smith, Amanda Floerke, Sammy G. Floerke, Megan Easterwood, and Lauren
Easterwood. These individuals have participated at Matagorda County
Livestock Judging Contest, Victoria County Judging Contest, and Goliad
County Livestock Judging Contest. Awards that have been accumulated are
Russell Farrow High Point Individual at Matagorda Livestock Judging
Contest. The Goliad Livestock Judging Contest the Sub-Junior Team recieved
5th place, Junior Team received 2nd place team, and
the Senior Team received 2nd place High Point Team Honors.
Individual awards at Goliad Contest are Leslie Demmer 3rd High
Point in the Junior Division, and Casey Dugat 2nd High Point
and Russel Farrow received 5th High Point in the Senior
Division. Congratulations and good luck at the District 11 Contest in
College Station, TX. Blaine Cherry, St. Paul 4-H Club Congratulations on a tremendous accomplishment to Blaine Cherry. Blaine’s market lamb entry receives one of the most prestigious honors winning Reserve Champion Lamb Carcass at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Blaine’s lamb had a live weight of 119 lbs., carcass weight of 75 lbs., dressing % of 63.0%, adjusted fat thickness of .12", ribeye area 3.4", USDA yield grade 1.60, and a USDA quality grade of Ch.N Again, congratulations on a job well done. |

The Buccaneer Commission will award a $100 certificate to those participants catching calves to support a Junior Livestock Show project (any animal project). Call the Extension office for an application.

SpecTra ‘00 is a unique concept in educating Senior 4-H’ers in life skills and all levels of 4-H opportunities.
Prime Time ‘00 is geared toward the young 4-H’ers where project learning is emphasized through 4-H opportunities.
The 4-H Center in Brownwood will begin processing applications on May 1, 2000. Applications will be accepted on a first drawn, first accepted basis.You must find your own chaperones if they are needed!

TEXAS MARKET POULTRY PRODUCTION & SELECTION WORKSHOP
Saturday, May 6, 2000
The 2000 Texas Market Poultry Production Workshop will be held Saturday, May 6 at Texas A&M University’s Louis Pearce Pavilion on George Bush Drive in College Station. The workshop will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will adjourn by 4:00 p.m.
Educational activities include in-depth discussions on brooding, management, sanitation and feeding programs and selection and processing methods for broilers, capons, turkeys and roasters. Discussion on selection procedures and bird quality characteristics will be followed by "hands on" practice in early culling and selecting and "putting together" show pens of broilers.
Youth interested in a career in poultry science should make a special effort to attend the workshop. Departmental personnel will be available to counsel potential students.
Pre-registration is required by April 21 - form attached. A registration fee fo $20.00 per person or family will be charged. A Bar-B-Q lunch will be served for a cost of $6.00 per person. Late registration is $25.00 and $8.00 per meal.
Parking is available around the Louis Pearce Pavilion and the nearby TAMU Poultry Science Research Farm on FM 2818. Shuttle service will be available between the farm and the pavilion.

NATIONAL 4-H COUNCIL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST DEADLINE APPROACHES...
HAVE YOU SENT IN YOUR ENTRIES YET?
Once again National 4-H Council is asking you to submit the very best examples that young 4-H photographers all over the country have to offer! National 4-H Council needs winning photos from your state and county fairs (from 1992 through 1999) to create the 2002 4-H Calendar. Photo submissions should be 8" x 10", in color, and in a horizontal format. Black & white photos will not be selected. Vertical shots will be accepted only if they can be cropped to fit the horizontal format of the calendar. All submissions will be returned, if not selected, in late August 2000. Complete name and address must accompany all photo submissions.
Thirteen photographs will be selected for the 2002 4-H Calendar.
Submissions will only be considered if they include the following information:
1. Full name and age of
person submitting photograph;
2. Entrant's Affiliation with 4-H;
3. Complete return address;
4. Telephone number;
5. List of awards that submitted photographs has received (county, state, 4-H or
other);
6. The photographer's thoughts about the photograph, in 25 words or less.
(The photographer and parent/guardian must sign a release.)

National Volunteer Week The San Patricio County Extension office would like to thank all San Patricio County 4-H club managers and leaders that help keep our youth on the right track and continue to help "Make the Best Better"! |
T.E.C.A.M.P. is a 4-day camp for 4-Hers and their parents or adult leaders that focuses on using technology to increase youth awareness of the threat of skin cancer. 4-Hers will discover ways to prevent and reduce both their own skin cancer risk as well as risk for their peers.
This year, T.E.C.A.M.P. will be held June 20-23 at Texas A&M University in College Station. We are providing scholarships for 12 campers (and their parent or adult leader.)
In order to qualify to participate in T.E.C.A.M.P., you must:
Be entering the 9th,
10th or 11th grade in the fall of 2000.
Have a parent or adult leader who is willing to accompany you to the camp.
Have basic keyboarding skills and a general knowledge of computers.
Have internet access at home or have permission to access the internet from your
school or public library.
Be willing to learn new things about web page design and health-related
concepts.
Be ready to have a great time and make new friends!

Major Show Steer tag orders
for the 2000-2001 stock show season will be due in
the County Extension Office no later
than Friday, April 28, 2000.
The tags can be purchased for $5.00 each at this time. Additional cost may
be billed later after we get the definite cost from the State office.
Order forms are available at the Extension office and will be accepted in
person, by mail or fax.
