FRUIT & NUT TREE PRUNING/CARE FIELD DAY
The Victoria County Pecan Growers will conduct a multi-site Fruit & Nut Tree Pruning Care Field Day to be held Thursday, February 11, 1999 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the native pecan river bottom of Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Scherer on the G. Frank Conti estate located ½ mile north of intersection of Hwy 87 and Loop 463 (about 2 miles north of Victoria). We will tour their pecan grove which has had 400 cords of pecan wood (trees) cut out and sold to thin the overcrowding trees. The plan is to bring this grove back into nut population.
Arrive on time so we can leave this site at 3:00 p.m. to go to our next stop. Dr. Larry Stein, Extension Horticulturist from Uvalde will address Tree Thinning: Steps to Bring a Grove into Production.
At 3:00 p.m. we will go to the home of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Janak, 837 Wischkaemper Rd. near the Wood Hi Community area. Dr. Stein will again conduct the event speaking on numerous topics for fruit and nut growers. Topics planned for discussion with some actual demonstrations include:
Pecan Tree Topping
Pecan Tree Thinning - Removing Crowded Trees
Training/Pruning Young Pecan Trees
Pruning Fruit Trees
Collecting Graftwood, and
Recommended Fruit & Nut Varieties
Don't miss these excellent pecan stops. It should conclude at 6:00 p.m. (See enclosed map).
