The Henderson County Horse Committee was formed
in 1980 to help in the need for an equine education program in
the Athens area. The committee is non-profit and one of seven
program area committees under the Texas Agricultural Extension
Service in Henderson County. It is made up of 12 volunteers,
serving a rotation three-year term, that are directly involved
in the horse industry. The committee hosts clinics, seminars,
shows and a wide variety of other education programs, with an
economical impact to the community. Contestants and spectators
use the surrounding restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores,
motels and other businesses in the area.
The Horse Committee was instrumental in the development of
the Henderson County Fair Park Complex, which attracts many
organizations to book their activities there. They contribute in
the effort to modernize, add conveniences, and updates in
equipment to the entire Fair Park Complex. Establishing the
Summer Jubilee Quarter Horse Show, which is a 5-day major
American Quarter Horse Show, has been one of the important accomplishments of the Horse
Committee. The show attracts contestants from all over Texas as
well as from other states.
Recognizing that our youth are important to the future of the
equine industry in Henderson County, The Horse Committee helps
the 4-H in many ways. Some of those ways are: donating buckles
for the County 4-H Show, donating the committee's profit days at
the coliseum to the 4-H for their use, and buying team jackets
for the 4-H Horse Judging Team.
Texas A&M is always ready to help The Horse Committee
with clinics and seminars throughout the year. Check out our
calendar of events.
The Henderson County Horse Committee holds an important
position in the equine community around Athens, TX. Believing
that a direct result of a good education program is a better
breed of horses, healthier horses and responsible owners.
